August 13th (my birthday!) premiered the holy grail of all action movies as a star-studded cast came together on this new action film, The Expendables. Sylvester Stalone went all out for this one and I must say it was soooo good!
The plot revolves around Barney Ross (Stalone) and his crew of mercenaries that are hired by different companies to assassinate different targets. The movie opens with American hostages about to be killed by African rebels. Ross and his team show up right as the rebels are about to kill the hostages. BAM! The first rebel is shot and is blown in two! Immediately I fell in love with this movie. Action packed, but not so much that the movie screen is drenched in blood and I’m not able to see anything.
Ross’s team consists of Jet Li (Romeo Must Die), Jason Statham (The Transporter), Terry Crews (Everybody Hates Chris), as well as Micky Rourke (The Wrestler) as the voice of reason. Ross’ team is sought out and hired by “Mr. Church” (Bruce Willis) to take out the General of a small Latin American island who is being controlled by an American investor (Eric Roberts) and his personal bodyguard (Steve Austin).
After warily accepting the job from “Mr. Church”, Ross and his team set out to recon the island before they complete their job. They are set up with a local contact named Sandra. Not known to Ross and his team, Sandra is the daughter of the General they are supposed to take out. The army becomes known of Ross’s team and sets out to kill them. In true Stalone fashion, they end up taking out a chunk of the army out while leaving the army, but are forced to leave Sandra behind because she refuses to leave.
After going back and forth with what he should do and with a little help with Rourke’s character, Ross and his team decided to go back and complete the job and try to rescue the girl.
If I could describe this movie in one word, I would describe it as EXPLOSIVE! There is lots of fighting and shooting and blood, but not too much to make you queasy.
Out of 5 popcorn balls, I would give it 4!
Go see it!
