Snap Judgement: The Avengers

Since the Super Bowl, trailers have been trickling out for this summer’s biggest super hero movie, The Avengers (sorry, Batman & Spider-Man). In truth, we had a teaser trailer available to us long before that, the after-the-credits ending to last summer’s Captain America.
The thing that stands out more than any other when watching the clips for the upcoming film is the number of characters. Captain America! Iron Man! Thor! Hulk! Black Widow! Hawkeye! Nick Fury! I can’t help but wonder if they’ll spend more time fighting against the bad guy or fighting for screen time.
The clip shows a nice range of action, humor, and drama. It’s clear from the two minutes’ worth of material we’ve seen that the good guys aren’t necessarily going to get along and play nice from the outset. And that sells. I mean, who doesn’t want to see what happens when Thor’s hammer slams into Captain America’s shield?
My first reaction, the snappiest of my snap judgements, was to think that Loki couldn’t pull off the big bad all by himself. Thor — who should still be stuck in Asgard, I think — just beat the pants off him single handed. But then I remembered that Loki now has the Cosmic Cube from the Captain America movie and the combination of the two might just be enough to create the kind of world-threatening danger that would require the combined might of the Avengers.
So the snap judgement I’m making from the clips is… I’m withholding judgement. I want it to be great. It looks great. But too many cooks and all that. I’m just hoping that the good folks at Marvel and Paramount can make this many characters work in a two-hour movie.
The Avengers is scheduled for release May 9th, 2012.
