Safe House

by Eric M. Blake June 29th, 2012 | Action, Drama, Movie Reviews
To be perfectly honest, I think the CIA has been given far too much grief.  There seems to be a growing mindset nowadays that secrecy, by virtue of being secrecy, is inherently bad.  In the current world of American cinema, about the only films that have the CIA— as an institution, anyway— as the good guys are “tongue-in-cheek” action flicks that apparently aren’t supposed to be taken seriously.  In more “serious” thrillers, these days, there tends to be a dark, creepy, twisted aura around the Agency.  Whether or not this is due to rampant Hollywood leftism is a subject

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

by Ronald A. Rowe June 27th, 2012 | Action, Historical, Movie Reviews
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is a concept that could only play out very well or very badly. There just isn’t any in-between for a movie that casts America’s most beloved president as humanity’s last line of defense against a horde of bloodthirsty vampires. As it turns out it is really good.

When I first read about the movie, which hit theaters this weekend, I honestly wasn’t sure if it was going to be a comedy or a serious film. AL:VH is all serious. There is not a hint of campiness about it. The story follows the life of Abraham Lincoln

Brave – An Enjoyable Animated Film

by James Maynard June 26th, 2012 | Animated, Family, Movie Reviews
From the makers of UP, Wall-E and Toy Story 3 comes Brave, the new Disney/Pixar film directed by Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman. This is Andrew's second picture as a director. For Pixar, he has helped write story lines, although this is far and away his biggest film to date. Brenda Chapman, on the other hand, was the first woman to direct a major studio's animated feature when she took the reins, along with two other directors, to make The Prince of Egypt for DreamWorks Animation.

The animated story is set in Scotland in the middle ages. Like most kid's

Teen Spirit – Smells like a Bad Movie

by James Maynard June 22nd, 2012 | Movie Reviews
ABC Family dramas are not usually a bastion of great acting talent, and Teen Spirit, a 2011 made-for-TV-movie, is no exception. The only possible exception to this rule in this film is someone who is not even normally an actor.

The story follows the “recently deceased person must atone for past behavior by helping someone who is still alive” pattern, with this particular version focusing on a pair of high school girls, one popular, and the other a lowly outcast.

The popular girl is Amber Pollock (Cassie Scerbo, Bring It On: In It to Win It ) a snotty, selfish blonde

That’s My Boy – That’s Not My Movie

by James Maynard June 22nd, 2012 | Comedy, Movie Reviews
That's My Boy is the new Adam Sandler comedy, directed by Sean Anders (Hot Tub Time Machine). This movie is a mediocre mish-mash of different scenes that have all been done before in better movies. There were very few really funny scenes, and even the moments that brought about a chuckle were usually short-lived.

The story follows Donny Berger (played by Adam Sandler, Happy Gilmore), a man who's fathered a son, whom he names Han Solo Berger (“Only da best name EVAH!”) with his schoolteacher. Donny raises him on his own for his several years, before losing contact with his
