Beneath the Darkness

by James Maynard April 27th, 2012 | Movie Reviews
Beneath the Darkness is a very dark film – and I do not mean that in a film noir sense. I do not even mean that in the same way that I would describe the cellar scenes which close out the action in Silence of the Lambs. This film was dark in the sense that it made me wonder if the filmmakers had paid the electric bill for most of the shooting. It was very difficult to watch many scenes just because it was hard to see what action was going on, and searching for any detail in the

Lockout (2012)

by R. Carnavale April 25th, 2012 | Action, Movie Reviews, Sci-Fi
Lockout isn’t your typical sci-fi action film with the usual spaceships and explosions. It's far more complex because it’s an amalgam of a lot of genres — primarily action and horror— subsumed under the broader term "sci-fi.” The story takes place in 2079, a year in which space prisons are government-funded programs and, sadly for rogue agent Snow (Guy Pearce), smoking has gone out of style. Snow is an arrogant, rough, wise-cracking anti-hero who gets convicted of a crime he didn't commit. His only option for freedom is to rescue the president's daughter, Emily (Maggie Grace), who is on

The Three Stooges – Kings of Slapstick Are Back

by James Maynard April 24th, 2012 | Comedy, Movie Reviews
The Three Stooges is, quite simply, the funniest movie I have seen on the big screen in a long time. Not only was I laughing every couple of minutes throughout the length of the film, but so were most of the people in the surprisingly full theater.

The film stars Chris Diamantopoulos (24) as Moe, Sean Hayes (Will and Grace) as Larry, and Will Sasso (MADtv) as Curly. Channeling the energy and spirit of the original trio, these three actors bring the Stooges back to life on the silver screen. The original Stooges' first film, Soup to Nuts, starred Moe

High Road – High Art orJust Blowing Smoke?

by James Maynard April 20th, 2012 | Comedy, Movie Reviews
High Road, a new low-budget stoner comedy directed by Matt Walsh (Due Date), is a step above the usual fare associated with the genre. While still not "high art,” it did provide an enjoyable story, fun characters, and the chance to see some relatively new young actors in largely improvisational roles.

Starring James Pumphery as Glenn “Fitz” Fitzgerald, the dialog in this movie was largely improvised based on paragraph-long scene descriptions given to the actors before each scene would shoot. As is often the case, that style of movie-making made the acting seem more realistic, but the dialog also suffered

Wrath of the Titans 3D

by T Akery April 18th, 2012 | Action, Movie Reviews
I was expecting a lot from this movie. After all, how can you go wrong with Greek gods, immortality, and huge monsters? But apparently, this movie failed on so many fronts that it should have been relabeled as a Greek tragedy.

If you are not up on your Greek mythology, here's a recap of the relationships between the gods, and the main emphasis. Zeus and Hades are brothers. Zeus banished Hades to the Underworld after a feud. Aries, who is also the God of War, is Zeus' son. Prometheus, who is the hero of the film, is also Zeus' son
