The Thing

by Ronald A. Rowe October 28th, 2011 | Sci-Fi
The third time's the charm for The Thing. The 1951 original was a sci-fi standout in its day. The 1982 John Carpenter remake was much more a horror movie than it was science fiction. The 2011 version, in theaters now, does a nice job of blending the genres. It also does a good job of remaking a twice-done film. The Thing is not so far from the source material that it constitutes a re-imagining, but it is definitely more than a mere retread of what we've already seen.

Unlike either of its predecessors, the new version features a woman in the lead role. If you like

Footloose

by T Akery October 25th, 2011 | Drama, Movie Reviews
Footloose is a remake of the old Kevin Bacon classic that launched at least one actor's career. If you have seen the old version, the basic story line remains the same. So here is a quick reminder of the basic plot.

An accident has killed five seniors including the Preacher's son. A grief-stricken town overreacts to the deaths and issues a ban on all forms of dancing. A few years later, Ren moves in with his aunt and uncle. As he struggles to fit in in this new town, he finds the rules rather restrictive. But he isn't the only

Inferno a Study in By-the-Book Thrillers

by Dennis Mayer October 21st, 2011 | Movie Reviews
The problem with watching a thriller like 1974's Towering Inferno is that we view it as movie watchers from 2011. Not only have we seen almost 40 years of movies that have been influenced by and evolved from 70s blockbusters; we've also consumed almost 40 years of film criticism, including 10 years of intense Internet-fueled meta-analysis of film.

The result makes a film like Inferno look cheesy and overwrought - almost like an ill-conceived B-movie. We can easily forget that a movie like Inferno was cutting-edge at its time, or that the pairing of Steve McQueen and Paul Newman was groundbreaking in

The Big Year

by T Akery October 19th, 2011 | Movie Reviews
The Big Year is a story about three people who are all fighting for one goal. That is to be the one person that spots the most different types of birds. But it also takes a deeper look into the lives behind these bird spotters. Because what they gain and sacrifice is almost as important as the birds themselves.

The story mainly focuses on the story of Brad Harris, who is played by Jack Black. He is a working man who hates his job, lives with his parents, and has an obsession with bird calls. As a result, he can
