Let’s Pollute

by Michele February 25th, 2011 | Animated, Movie Reviews
While many people are discussing which film will win Best Picture or who will be named Best Supporting Actor, have you considered what film will be named the Best Animated Short at the Oscars?  With five films in the running, there is one that stands out:  Let's Pollute.

Let's Pollute was created by indie filmmaker (and former Pixar animator), Geefwee Boedoe.  Interestingly, Mr. Boedoe created this film over a three-year time period in a home studio.    In addition, the budget for this film is a fraction of the costs for the other four films, as under $15,000 (plus some volunteer

Don’t Think, “Just Go With It”

by Samantha Glavin February 22nd, 2011 | Comedy, Movie Reviews
I don’t remember the last time I went to the theater to see a movie with Adam Sandler or Jennifer Aniston in it. I don’t think I ever have. I had pretty much written them and their typical movies off as overdone and unfunny. But this all this changed last weekend when I dodged the big-box cinemas and went to a tiny local, independent theater. We were willing to see any movie, and Just Go with It (2011) was the one that looked the most interesting out of the grand total of three movies that were being shown. And

Salt

by Ronald A. Rowe February 17th, 2011 | Action, Movie Commentary, Movie Reviews
Warning – this review / commentary contains major spoilers.

Salt is an action film starring Angeline Jolie as Evelyn Salt, a CIA agent accused of being an undercover Russian spy. If this were a standard review, I would be generally positive in my comments. I enjoyed the movie overall, but I’m going to focus here on the negatives that separate a good movie from a great one. The DVD comes with three versions of the film – Theatrical Release, Director’s Cut, and Extended Cut. For the record, I watched the Director’s Cut and my comments here pertain to that particular

True Grit: Finally We’ve Got a Good New Western

by Samantha Glavin February 15th, 2011 | Action, Historical, Movie Reviews
The Western frontier has spellbound American audiences for more than a century, making tales of cowboys and sheriffs prime figures in storytelling. Something about the Old West inspires a passion in the heart and soul. Despite its past prominence in American culture, the Western has inevitably ceased to become a mainstream genre. Yet the sun has not yet set on this old dusty desert — modern-day films like True Grit (2011) keep the Old West’s spirit alive and well.

True Grit is the story of headstrong Mattie, a young girl with an adult wit on a mission to avenge the

Red—Retired, But Still Extremely Dangerous

by Samantha Glavin February 10th, 2011 | Action, Comedy, Movie Reviews
For the past couple of years, I’ve been skeptical of Bruce Willis ever again making a successful action-comedy hybrid. Once one of the action genre’s brightest stars, he seemed to have recently started, in my opinion, to lack a little luster. Red (2010) gave me a bit more hope that Willis, and the act-com genre, isn’t going to fade out anytime soon.

Red is the story of Frank Moses (Bruce Willis), an ex-black ops agent whose peaceful retired life is interrupted when a new enemy sets out to kill him. Moses is forced back into his former high-stakes profession to
